Growing up, I was quite the tomboy, always tinkering around in my grandfather's shed. Now I tinker around in my own. My mom was very crafty, and we were always gluing things together for all types of seasonal occasions. So you can see where my love of mixed media came into play. Growing up, I always saw images and objects play together in my mind's eye, so I thought digital animation was my vocation. During the first year of my B.F.A. (Hons: Toronto, 2001), I played with clay, paint and wood... they replaced the computer as my tool of expression. Growing up, my sketchbooks have always been by my side. I see composition first, then tone, then media, then color. I've always had my nose in a book for research or pleasure, or my eye looking through a camera for memory or documentation. I'm always learning new media (welding, cast glass) & ideologies, because the broader the foundation, the higher the pyramid of insight/expression. Growing up, life has dealt an array of cards: some that shine like the sun off a mirror, some that swallow you up like a black magnetic hole. I've finally been dealt the 'Expression' card: I now have time to pursue my artistic passion and through volunteering, help others to find theirs. On the whole, my deck is reassuring, challenging, playful and necessary. |
