"The whole, halved, seeks again its wholeness" (Jeanette Winterson) Each idea, each quick sketch, each fully formed artwork is a snapshot of my reaching. Every infinite direction can be explored so you can imagine how finite these snapshots are. They are simply impressions along the way of wandering. (It is beyond language, beyond me… but I am not beyond my wanting of it.) I drift towards what I’m drawn to, like I’m curiously meeting a new part of myself. I love exploring ideas of simultaneous contrast: luminous shadows, implosive expansion. I also love to play with scale: by walking through micro-organisms, or seeing galaxies as flower forms. After I’ve had my fill of gathering information about a specific subject, I sit and watch all the pieces (photo’s, feelings, theories, data) interact together. They float, overlap, intertwine, repel, morph, shatter or align. Sometimes, after a while, they settle and I sketch or sculpt what I see.
As long as I am reaching, this will be what is reaching back to me.
Layers are language. They are metaphors in mixed media. I relish watching an artwork form itself and reveal aspects I never could have imagined.
